Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) constitute a serious health concern for people in the United States, according to the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2017, there were almost 2.3 million diagnosed cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. The number of cases involving syphilis being passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy or delivery has doubled since 2013.

It has the ability to detect HIV by screening for HIV antibodies and certain genetic materials that make up the RNA of the HIV virus cells.
