Areas of Work
The work of the WAC is divided into three key areas: Global Programmes, Global Constituency Programmes and Communications. In addition to these key areas is the work with the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) through the Independent Communication and Consultation Facility (CF).
The areas of work are determined by WAC’s overarching objectives and activities:
1 – Catalyse and strengthen national campaigns
1.1 Assess and map national campaigning needs and capacity.
1.2 Convene multi-constituency national and regional meetings/workshops to develop joint campaigning plans and links with neighboring countries.
1.3 Provide support through mentorship, communications tools and resources as well as links with other national campaigners, providers of additional technical support and donors.
1.4 Convene, promote and strengthen key national and regional leaders to promote campaigning around the themes of leadership and accountability in 24 countries across 4 regions1 .
1.5 Support a monitoring and evaluation process to measure the impact of campaigns at the national and regional level.
2 – Increase involvement of international constituency-based networks
2.1 Conduct outreach to current and new international constituency-networks so as to facilitate development of common campaigning activities.
2.2 Catalyse the involvement of new or existing constituency-based partners in Universal Access campaigning activities.
2.3 Convene and link constituency-based networks, share best practices and lessons learned on campaigning.
2.4 Convene, promote and strengthen the leaders of key constituency-based networks in order to encourage campaigning around the themes of leadership and accountability for Universal Access.
2.5 Support these networks through mentorship, communications tools and resources.
3 – Increase access to resources and information
3.1 Produce generic campaigning tools and materials on accountability for Universal Access and leadership, including guidelines and advice for campaigners (e.g.for World AIDS Day or Global Weeks of Action (GWOA).
3.2 Establish and manage websites to provide campaigners with information on Universal Access, leadership and accountability;
3.3 Share best practices and lessons learned on campaigning and leadership through newsletters and other tools.
3.4 Disseminate campaigning efforts to increase international support for national campaigns.
1The four priority regions are: Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and Asia. Additional emphasis on OECD countries, North Africa and Middle East and the Western Pacific will be largely dependant on funding, once the priority regions have been covered
Global Programmes
WAC, through its office in Cape Town, is now working closely with civil society organisations in Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia. WAC is serving as a facilitator to strengthen African voices on AIDS and help build national, regional and global campaigns demanding leaders to keep the promise of universal access. In addition to the programmes in these countries, WAC is also working to strengthen campaigning in four priority regions are: Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and Asia.
Global Constituencies Programme
WAC is committed to strengthening, catalysing and facilitating stronger and more connected movements across and between constituencies to address universal access targets as well as other key HIV and AIDS related commitments. Through partnerships, cooperation and inclusion of those most affected by the disease, the Global Constituencies Programme (GCP) aims to galvanise civil society efforts amongst key international constituency-based networks to support and strengthen the campaign to achieving universal access to AIDS prevention, treatment care and support.
Communications
Communications is a key element to all of the work that the WAC does. The goal of WAC’s communications is to increase access to resources and information on campaigning for universal access. This takes on many forms, from the websites to campaigning tools around key events such as World AIDS Day and UNGASS, national campaigning tools, newsletters and elists.
PCB
The Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) is the governing body of UNAIDS. Within the PCB, there is an NGO Delegation that represents civil society's views and needs. These are your representatives from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America and the Caribbean. To find out more about their work with UNAIDS, and how you can input, please read below.
