The World AIDS Campaign is committed to supporting youth leadership in the response to HIV and AIDS. On the 30 and 31 of January 2008, the World AIDS Campaign facilitated a youth consultation, with the aim of providing a space for youth organisations to set their own priorities in working towards universal access. At the consultation, participants noted 6 key areas of work, which the World AIDS Campaign is supporting the development of throughout 2008:

  1. Ensuring the sustainability of youth participation
  2. Examining the impact of provider-initiated testing on young people and the role youth can play
  3. Examining what international organisations can do to affect change at the national level
  4. Making universal access messages more youth friendly
  5. Looking at how are young people working towards the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action and linking HIV and AIDS with sexual and reproductive health
  6. Strengthening partnerships towards universal access 2010

Why should young people lead?
With more than 12 million young people living with HIV and AIDS, constituting more than half of all people living with HIV and AIDS worldwide, it is clear that youth must be leaders in the response to the pandemic and of all efforts to halt and reverse its spread. It is crucial for local, national and international decision-makers to follow through on their commitments made to young people on the issue of HIV and AIDS. In order to ensure such accountability, young people need to continue to play an active role in challenging them.
