World AIDS Day Commemoration 2008

Anonymous User

01/12/08 – 21:20 to 21:20

This year marks the 27th anniversary since HIV was first recognized in 1981, and the world became engaged in the war against AIDS. To observe this worldwide event, the Michigan Department of Community Health, Division of Health, Wellness & Disease Control in conjunction with the City of Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion and Wayne County Department of Public Health, will commemorate World AIDS Day on Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Northwest Activity Center in Detroit, Michigan.

The observance will be held from 10:00am to 3:00pm in the Ballroom of the Northwest Activity Center. We are planning to host over twenty area HIV/AIDS prevention services, offer free confidential and anonymous HIV testing, along with STD screenings. Also, we are planning to have additional health screenings such as high blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and TB testing available during the observance. In addition, there will be local and state dignitaries on hand to commemorate the event.

We are planning to also have skits focusing on HIV/AIDS issues performed by the Youth Development Institute and Children's Hospital Horizon's Project will also present an educational workshop on HIV/AIDS-STDs.

For more information on the World AIDS Day Commemoration, please call Tracy L. Peterson-Jones of MDCH/DHWDC at (313) 456-4422 or Anthony Harris, of the City of Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion at (313) 876-4878.
