Towards Universal Access: Young People in Action

Towards Universal Access: Young People in Action is an e-Course for young people who want to create lasting change in how HIV affects their communities and the world. Participants will have an opportunity to connect with young leaders from around the world and build an action plan to mobilise universal access campaigns.

Our first e-course is now over. However, you can still download the course work from our website below. To read more about the planning process involved in the course, what happened and what was learned, please click here to download the e-course summary.

Why young people?

Young people are at the heart of the global HIV epidemic. Almost half of all the new HIV infections worldwide are among people between 15 and 24 years old (UNAIDS 2007). Many million more young people are affected by HIV within their families and communities.

Stopping HIV epidemics cannot be done without young people. Young people bring invaluable insight into the realities of their peers’ lives and innovative solutions. Young people also have a right to participate and take action on issues that affect their lives.

Curriculum and Structure

Towards Universal Access: Young People in Action e-course includes four pillars for learning:

  • On-line lessons: Participants learn about key issues for understanding HIV epidemics and strategies for creating change through eight lessons.
  • Peer-to-peer dialogue: Participants engage in on-line discussions with other participants and the course facilitators.
  • Project portfolio: Assignments are provided to guide participants through the process of creating an action plan that they can use in their community. Each participant has their own blog to post their assignments and other things that are important to them.
  • E-mentoring: Experienced young leaders who will support participants to define and achieve their goals for the course and to figure out how to achieve the change they desire.

Participants receive a certificate upon successful completion of the e-course. Participants can apply for Leadership Projects to help put their plan into action.
