Taking the Lead on World AIDS Day

Below you will find summaries of events and activities that took place for World AIDS Day 2007. From Thailand to Greece, we received reports, photos and information from people around the world who took the lead on and around the 1st of December to stop AIDS.

Bangladesh

The Bandhu Social Welfare Society - Rajburi Field Office organised many events for World AIDS Day in the area, including: a rally that was organised with the help of 60 volunteers and staff in which 300 people attended; a discussion organised by the Deputy Commissioner's Office with the theme of take the lead, attended by NGOs and health department members; two information booths which gave out information to 500 pedestrians, rickshaw drivers and their passengers; songs, speeches and dances.

Benin President and President of PLHIV Network on World AIDS Day 2007

Benin celebrated its 20th World AIDS Day with many activities, including a cyclist race, launched by Benin President Dr. Boni YAYI, a march, a red ribbon cutting and public information stands.
Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council held a mini-concert to observe World AIDS Day under the theme "Leadership: Talk & Act." During the concert, which was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Health, youth took to the stage, reciting poems and singing songs like Teman Sejati (True Friend) and We Are the World.

Cameroon
Under the theme of "Become a leader! Stop AIDS! Keep the Promise." the Ministry of Public Health launched National AIDS Week in Cameroon. The First Lady of Cameroon, Chantal Biya presided at the grand cultural gala which marked the end of AIDS Week and World AIDS Day. Other events that took place during the week included workshops, roundtable conferences, HIV screening, a sensitisation campaign, a march pass by youth groups, a exposition and animation by different cultural groups.

NGO Estonian Network PLWH hosted events for World AIDS Day including a candle light vigil in the center of the city of Narva.
Ghana

Kumasi, Ghana

A community debate was organised on the theme of leaders, their attitudes and behaviours and how they influence youth. The debate was participated in by both leaders and youth. Leaders were identified as teachers, parents, pasts, chiefs and assembly members. In addition to the community debate, a talk show with was organised which featured a person living with HIV/AIDS sharing experiences with youth.

India

Global Tamill Telugu People Foundation hoisted a huge billboard in Chennai for World AIDS Day

The Global Tamill Telugu Pe=ople Foundation hoisted a large banner over traffic from 26th November until 5th December to raise awareness on AIDS. The banner, entitled " A call for leadership" targeted young people and emphasised safe sex and condom use.

Davangere, Karnataka State, India

The Department of Community Medicine in Davangere, Karnataka State took the lead on World AIDS Day organising a public awareness rally in the city in which nearly 300 students and 50 staff members took part in.  

Goa, India

As part of the world AIDS leadership campaign, Goa University organised a workshop on HIVAIDS leadership for the Psychology teachers from the west zone of India

Kolkata, India

The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Foundation hosted an Awareness Camp. At the camp, students participated, wearing their school uniforms, by distributing badges and leaflets to those who attended the camp.

On of the leaders celebrated by the ILO for World AIDS Day

International Labour Organisation (ILO)

For 2007 World AIDS Day, the ILO created an exhibition that featured a few of the leaders in the world of work who are taking action on HIV/AIDS.

Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA)

Members of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) commemorated World AIDS Day 2007 with 104 local events in 34 countries. The goal of the events was to highlight the pressing need to build youth leadership and to listen to the voices of young leaders fighting HIV and AIDS in their communities.

For World AIDS Day the organization Alfaomega Associazione Volontari, using the slogan “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.” created a prevention campaign called “Tris 2007.” Within this campaign, the organisation created a postcard that was distributed to 20,000 places in the area. In addition, on World AIDS Day 900 students attended an event which included discussions with local doctors and the founder of the organisation, Giovanni Malagutti. A “Stop AIDS” party was held during the evening.

Members of the College of Denistry/Hawler Medical University Students' World AIDS Day Team (SWAD)

The Students¹ World AIDS Day Team (SWAD), a group of students from the College of Denistry/Hawler Medical University organized a World AIDS Day senimar on 29 November 2007. Just prior to the seminar students wore red around campus and printed posters to advertise the event.

The emphasis of the seminar was on cross-infection control, which is an important issue for dental care, and the team made it clear that everyone can take part to stop AIDS. The event was so successful it was also covered on a local TV station, Qellat TV.

On World AIDS Day, the organisation Force Jeaune Universlle organised a rally in Abidjan that drew 7,000 participants.

Exhibit on World AIDS Day in Macedonia Square

Y-Peer helped to support many events for World AIDS Day. These events included a celebration at Macedonia Square, "Take the Lead. Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." which feature a giant red ribbon made of balloons, where campaign messages were displayed and leadership pledges collected. They also hosted a skating event called "Break the Ice - Take the lead", showed a movie that was developed by Y-Peer, UNFPA and MTV, and participated in a music festival.

On World AIDS Day, The Commission of the Indian Ocean (COI)took it upon itself to lead by example, with the General Secretary of COI speaking, recalling the importance of leaders in the fight against AIDS. "Experience clearly shows that the significant advances of the response to HIV were accomplished under the auspices of strong leadership ", he asserted in his speech.

World AIDS Day events hosted by the Commission of the Indian Ocean

launched a week long AIDS awareness campaign. The campaign was kicked off by a mass oath and signing of a long red ribbon by children, health activists as well as Sudanese, Japanese and Indian Ambassadors.

The 22.5 m red ribbon will be sent to the UN. During the signing, Shakil Ahmed Kakvi, Chairman of the Kainat Foundation, read out loud to children attending the "Take the Lead, Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." Pledge.

Awka

  56 youth campaigners from the Youth Development and Enlightenment Initiative (YDEI) rallied in Awka on World AIDS Day.

Akure

The Kids & Teens Resource Centre (KTRC) designated World AIDS Day week as "Free HIV-CT Week" in 4 tertiary institutions. With support of the National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) they were able to print materials, including banners, posters and flyers. Their efforts reached 60,000 students, and 2, 045 came out for testing.

Tanzania

Dar es Salaam Tanzania

  Ebrahim Haji Ithna-Asheri Charitable Health Centre in Tanzania marked the World Aids Day with a three day event. On both the Thursday and Friday prior to World AIDS Day a the Health Centre hosted a programme that included a slide show, a quiz on AIDS, a colouring competition for kids as well as educational flyers and souvenirs. On Saturday, World AIDS Day, in addition to the programme, free HIV testing was offered and free t-shirts, hats and desert was given to those who participated in the testing.

Moshi, Tanzania

The White Orange Youth Group, a non-profit youth outreach group in Tanzania organised many events leading up to World AIDS Day including the screening of an AIDS documentary called, “Love in the time of AIDS,” a school HIV/AIDS concert in which three secondary schools participated, the screening of an AIDS documentary at two primary schools and a fundraising event. On World AIDS Day, White Orange Youth, along with other organisations, marched from Mbuyuni to Pesua led by a marching band. The event was attended by the assistant mayor and included many activities, such as mobile testing stations under the banner, “be a leader, get tested.”

Thailand

Shinawatra University, Thailand

Volunteer students from many countries at Shinawatra University (SIU) organised events aimed at raising awareness on HIV prevention and increasing positive attitude towards HIV/AIDS positive people.  

The major event they organised was held on 29 November 2007. At it, presentations by students emphasised the great significance of World AIDS Day and the previous activities of AIDS Awareness Project 2007 (AWP 2007) , organised by Student Affairs Division, SIU, in August and September 2007. The AWP 2007 was sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHE) Thailand which responded to the World AIDS Day Theme: Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise: ­Leadership by calling on university students to take the initiative and to provide leadership on AIDS. Exhibitions utilising WAD materials from the website and photos from the previous AIDS Awareness Project of SIU were displayed. During the presentation at the auditorium B, posters, videos and series of mini-spots from Worlds AIDS Day Campaign website were also presented to audience.

Uganda

SPAU (Single Parents Association of Uganda) hosted activities on World AIDS Day which included challenging some 300 people to take the Stop AIDS Leadership Pledge. Their WAD theme was "Taking the Lead by Challenging HIV and AIDS Discrimination."  
United States

Joanne Jefferson set up a table in her offices' lobby (at the Social Security Adminstration) and gave out information, ribbons, bracelets and candy.  

Tyler, Texas

In Tyler, a commemorative service, candlelight walk, and remembrance took place on World AIDS Day. In addition Tyler AIDS Services offered free, confidential and anonymous HIV screening.

Washington DC

  The IFC (International Finance Corporation) Against AIDS, and the World Bank’s South Asia Finance and Private Sector (SASPF) unit and the South Asia Region (SAR) AIDS team organised a World AIDS Day seminar focusing on the leadership role of private sector partners in implementing innovative approaches to effectively combat HIV and AIDS.

Introducing the seminar, World Bank Managing Director, Jose Luis Daboub said the seminar was part of an ongoing dialogue between the World Bank and IFC with private sector players in South Asia and Africa, in particular, on how to scale up the private sector engagement and explore its leadership role in stopping AIDS. Speakers at the event were Michael Cover, Senior Vice President Ogilvy PR Worldwide; Tamsin Smith, President, Product (RED) and Sai Paranjpye Indian Filmmaker.
